Which Polish Pottery Plate Size Do You Need?

Boleslawiec plates are made in a handful of standard shapes, and the same pattern is usually available across all of them, so a set assembled over several years still matches. The sizes below are measured across the widest point of the rim.

10.75" dinner plate (shape 1014)

The full-size plate for main courses. At just under 11 inches it is a touch larger than a typical American dinner plate, with a wide flat well and a gently raised rim. This is the size most customers start with. Shop 10.75" dinner plates.

9.5" luncheon plate (shape 1001)

A lighter, easier-to-handle plate that works for lunch, brunch, breakfast, and smaller dinner portions. Many customers use it as their everyday dinner plate, especially at a compact table or in a smaller cabinet. Shop 9.5" luncheon plates.

7.5" salad and dessert plate (shape 814)

The second plate in a standard place setting: salads, desserts, sandwiches, toast, and cheese. It also doubles as a lid for our 6" bowls. Shop 7.5" salad plates.

6.5" appetizer plate and saucer (shape 818)

A bread-and-butter plate, appetizer plate, or saucer under a 12 oz mug. Useful for tea service, tapas, and kids' portions. Shop 6.5" appetizer plates.

Soup and pasta bowls

Wide, shallow bowls with a rim that matches the plates, for soup, pasta, salad, and grain bowls. Shop soup and pasta bowls.

Building a Set

A classic four-piece place setting is one dinner plate, one salad plate, one soup bowl, and one mug. Add the 6.5" plate for a five-piece setting or a saucer under the mug. Because every piece is sold individually, you can buy four dinner plates today and add salad plates next month; the patterns stay in production, so matching later is rarely a problem. If you are collecting a Unikat or DU artist pattern, buy the pieces you need together, since those runs are smaller.

How Polish Pottery Plates Are Made

Each plate starts as white stoneware clay from the Boleslawiec region, is fired once, then decorated by hand with small sponge stamps and brushes before a clear glaze and a second firing at about 1,250°C (2,280°F). The high temperature fuses the decoration under the glaze and produces a surface that is chip-resistant, non-porous, and lead- and cadmium-free. Small variations between plates are normal and are how you can tell handmade Boleslawiec from printed imitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes do Polish pottery plates come in?

The standard sizes are 10.75" dinner, 9.5" luncheon, 7.5" salad and dessert, and 6.5" appetizer or saucer, plus matching soup and pasta bowls. We carry all of them, in the same patterns, so full sets are easy to assemble.

Are Polish pottery plates dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe?

Yes. Boleslawiec stoneware is fired at a high temperature and glazed all over, so it is safe in the dishwasher, microwave, oven [confirm max temperature], and freezer. Avoid sudden temperature shocks and do not use it on a stovetop or under a broiler.

Can I buy a single plate, or only sets?

Every plate is sold individually. Buy exactly the number you need and add matching pieces whenever you like.

Will different sizes in the same pattern match?

Yes. The same pattern number (for example 166a or 217a) is used across all shapes, so a 10.75" dinner plate, 7.5" salad plate, and soup bowl in that number are decorated to match.

How do I know the plates are authentic Boleslawiec?

Everything we sell is made by Zaklady Ceramiczne "Boleslawiec" in Boleslawiec, Poland, and carries the factory backstamp on the base. Slight variations in stamping and brushwork are a sign of genuine hand decoration.
